Nasser Hussain replies to Ben Duckett on JaiswalFormer England captain Nasser Hussain tore into opener Ben Duckett for his remarks about Yashasvi Jaiswal and others learning aggressive batting after watching the Bazball team over the past two years.

Ben Duckett has been getting trolled on social media for some of his comments and statements during the recently concluded Rajkot Test, where India won by 434 runs, consigning England to their second-biggest margin of defeat in Test cricket.

Yashasvi Jaiswal slammed a brilliant double century, making it two in two consecutive Tests. By the end of Day 3, he had brought up his century and put India on course for a huge second-innings lead.

After stumps on Day 3, Duckett, who had cracked a brilliant 88-ball century a day before, opined that some credit for Jaiswal’s hitting should go to England for apparently showing the way about the attacking approach in Test cricket.

Ben Duckett said, “When you see players from the opposition playing like that, it almost feels like we should take some credit that they’re playing differently than how other people play Test cricket.”

This remark from the 29-year-old opener didn’t sit well with almost everyone on social media. Netizens pointed out that batters like Sehwag, McCullum, Gilchrist, Jayasuriya, Pant, and Hayden had already batted in such an enterprising manner before the Bazball era.

After the conclusion of the Test, former England skipper Nasser Hussain lambasted Duckett for his statement. Alluding to Jaiswal’s story of hardships in Mumbai as a teenager and his spectacular performances in the last two IPL seasons, Hussain reckoned that, if anything, it is the England players who need to learn from young Jaiswal.

“The comment on Jaiswal that he has learned from us, I am going to touch on that. He has not learned from you, he has learned from his upbringing and all the hard yards he has put in while growing up, he has learned from the IPL. If anything, I would look at him and learn from him,” Hussain said on the Sky Sports podcast.

The 55-year-old commentator asserted that the England players need to be wary of what they say in public.

“So, whatever they are saying in public and in that dressing room, I hope they are going back into their room with self-introspection. I can look at that lad and learn from him. Otherwise, it becomes a cult, doesn’t it? At times, Bazball has been described as a cult where you cannot criticise either within or externally. Even in this regime, there is room for learning and improving,” he added.

The fourth Test match will be played in Ranchi, starting Friday.
