How do bail bonds work
When someone is arrested and taken to jail, they will go through the booking process and will be issued a bail amount that would enable them to go free. This bail amount is based on the severity of the alleged crime they are accused of, their past criminal history, and if they might be considered a flight risk. If the defendant cannot afford to pay the full bail amount, they can contact a bail bond company.
Thinking of using bail? A bail bond company near you will post the bail for them in exchange for a fee. The fee is usually 10% (but can be as low as 1% down) of the total bail amount and vary depending on which state there the person was arrested or charged. The bail bond company may require collateral from the cosigner of the bail bond. Collateral can be anything from a home, to a car, jewelry or something of value.
If the defendant skips bail the cosignor is responsible to the bail bonds company for the full amount of the bond. Because, the bonds company is liable to the court for the full amount of the bond to the court. The court will issue a bench warrant for a defendant who skips bail and doesn't show up to court, or court appointed directions (drug tests, having a job, not drinking, not doing drugs, not committing more crimes, no interaction with a victim or the police, etc). When a defendant skips court, the bonds company will hire a bounty hunter to track down the defendant and bring that person to jail to forfeit the bond.
